AL Caiola - Caio

This laid-back album dates from 1963 and features Al and his orchestra adding a gentle lounge flavour to a bunch of popular Italian classics. The playing, despite the impressions given by the cheesy cover, is tasteful and beautifully phrased. Al puts his notes just around the beat to create that lazy-summer feeling which, as a small furry composite being of impeccable musical taste, seems to me to be the apotheosis of the lounge style.

Enoch Light - Future Sound Shock

Hello chaps...Mr Snookles is back from his summer of indolence (southern hemisphere) and ready to start a new season of livin', lovin', and loungein' (is that a word?)

Today's offering is from the redoubtable Enoch Light. Enoch always had the best players around him, and it shows in the quality on this album. Enoch also had a flair for arrangement, and these tunes showcase his talents, and also bring out the best in the studio engineers. My personal favourite is 'Caravan', where the theme moves from a Persian-sounding oboe to electric sitar to muted trumpet, creating a delightful exotic atmosphere.

Enoch's use of changing timbres for his melodies ranks with the best of the classical orchestrators in my opinion - the sounds are always changing and evolving in a most satisfying manner. Add a healthy serve of bongos and latin percussion and you've got a great lounge listening experience. There is another version of this album floating around in the blogosphere, but the 128kps format doesn't really do justice to the sound. If you have the other album, I recommend you upgrade to the 320kbps version - you won't be disappointed.

Gibson Les Paul BFG

Stripped down and ready for action! A decidedly nontraditional Les Paul for rockers who want an Les Paul with attitude and don't care about good looks. It has the sound and playability you'd expect from Gibson, while its raw look stands Les Paul styling on its head: unsanded top, no binding, no pickup rings, no truss rod cover, no toggle switch rings, no fretboard position indicators (dots on the side only), with wooden knobs that have no numbers. This rough and tough guitar has sonics to match: steamy hot tones from the novel pickup combination of a single coil P90 in the neck and a BurstBucker 3 in the bridge - like having an LP Special and a Standard in one guitar. Mini toggle pickup selection switch located near two volume and one master tone controls. Kill switch located where rhythm/lead switch used to be. "Distressed" stop bar, Tune-o-matic bridge, and Grovers and "shopworn" case complete the raw look of this very different looking Les Paul.

Features & Specs:

  • Unsanded carved maple top
  • Mahogany back
  • 1950s rounded mahogany neck
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • Scale length: 24-3/4"
  • Number of frets: 22
  • Nut width: 1.695"
  • Inlays: white side dots only
  • Hardware: gun metal (trans cherry finish) or distressed black chrome (trans black and trans gold finish)
  • Tailpiece: stopbar (distressed)
  • Bridge: Tune-o-matic
  • Knobs: two wooden volumes, one wooden tone
  • Tuners: Grover (distressed)
  • Neck pickup: P-90
  • Bridge pickup: Zebra BurstBucker 3
  • Controls: 2 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch
  • Kill switch toggle
